Overview
Lightsaber Combat Forms can be used by any individual that is proficient with Lightsabers and is Force Sensitive. Typically learning a Form requires training of some sort, but GMs are free to make exceptions as needed. Activating a Lightsaber Form is a swift action, in which the combatant assumes the appropriate fighting stance and makes a Use the Force check to determine the benefits provided by their chosen Form. As a swift action on subsequent terms, the combatant may make another Use the Force check to “reset” the benefit provided by the combat Form but must take the new result, even if worse. Forms can only be adopted if the character is engaged in personal scale combat and wielding a Lightsaber.

Upon meeting the prerequisites, any character that has the Force Sensitivity and Weapon Proficiency (Lightsaber) feats can learn a single Lightsaber Form listed below. Taking the corresponding Lightsaber Form talent also grants proficiency with the Form, or allows the character to learn an additional Form if the corresponding Form is already known. Regardless of how many Forms are known, the force user can only have one Lightsaber Form active at a time (though having the Form talent represents an innate mastery which confers special benefits, see “Form Mastery” under each entry). The force user gains every Form benefit (and drawback) with a difficulty equal to or less than his Use the Force check.

Classic Forms
Listed below are the styles commonly found in the Old Republic Era. The text in italics indicates additional bonuses if the character possess corresponding Lightsaber Combat talent. Note that with the exception of Shien and Juyo, a practitioner cannot adopt a Form while benefiting from Dark Rage unless the practitioner also knows the Force Technique Improved Dark Rage.

Form 1 – Shii-Cho
Prerequisites: Block, Deflect
The most basic Lightsaber Form, Shii-Cho was invented along with the creation of the modern Lightsaber. While considered outdated by most, Shii-Cho is a well rounded style. The basics of this style are intrinsic to most Lightsaber fighting styles which is why almost every Jedi in the old republic received at least some training in Shii-Cho.
DC 15: If the practitioner attempted an attack with a Lightsaber on an opponent in the previous round unsuccessfully, he gains a +1 Form bonus to all attack rolls.
DC 20: Adopting a more guarded stance, the practitioner gains a +2 Form bonus to Block and Deflect but suffers a -1 penalty to attack rolls.
DC 25: With one fluid motion that tends to leave the practitioner open, the practitioner can attempt to disarm his opponent. He gains a +5 Form bonus on a single disarm attempt. On any turn he attempts to do so, he also suffers a -2 penalty to his Reflex Defense until the start of his next turn.
Form Mastery: Masters of Shii-Cho use the tight, defensive movements of the style to protect themselves from harm and are accustom to dealing with barrages of attacks that would overwhelm other Lightsaber wielders. Regardless of what Form the master of Shii Cho adopts, he only suffers a -2 cumulative penalty on consecutive Block and Deflect attempts in the same turn (instead of the standard -5).

Form 2 – Makashi
Prerequisites: Block, Lightsaber Defense
A Lightsaber Form specifically designed to duel other Lightsaber wielders, Makashi focuses on preventing disarm attempts and engaging other opponents wielding Lightsabers but is less effective against blaster fire and other ranged attacks.
DC 15: The duelist style is specifically geared toward a single opponent armed with a Lightsaber, thus granting a +1 Form bonus on attack rolls against that combatant.
DC 20: Specializing in blocking other Lightsabers, the practitioner gains a +2 Form bonus on Block attempts against a single target but suffers a -1 penalty on Block and Deflect attempts against other opponents. The target is declared as a free action once per turn on the practitioners turn but may be changed in subsequent rounds.
DC 25: Mastering the precise art of the Makashi Feint, the practitioner gains a +5 Form bonus on any Feint attempt with a Lightsaber in hand but suffers a -2 penalty to damage rolls on any attack that successfully hits a target after a feint. This penalty is applied before a critical hit multiplier if appropriate.
Form Mastery: All Makashi masters apply their precise defensive understanding when wielding a lightsaber in one hand and gain a +2 Form bonus to their Reflex Defense when doing so.

Form 3 – Soresu
Prerequisites: Block, Deflect
The ultimate expression of the defensive Lightsaber combat, Soresu focuses entirely on defending the practitioner against incoming assault of all kinds. While its practitioners are unmatched in the protection of themselves, this Form receives heavy criticism for its inability to create offensive opportunity.
DC 15: The practitioner gains a +1 Form bonus to a single Defense of his choice against a single combatant he can clearly perceive. This bonus can be changed as a free action on the practitioner’s turn once per round.
DC 20: When wielding a Lightsaber and fighting defensively, your character gains an additional +2 Form bonus on Reflex Defense. The guarded stance this Form requires levies a -1 penalty on attacks of opportunity, however.
DC 25: The pinnacle of the defensive art, while in this form your character gains a +5 Form bonus on Use the Force checks made to Block and Deflect. The defensive superiority of this stance comes at a cost, however, and the practitioner suffers a -2 penalty to all attack rolls.
Form Mastery: A master of Soresu is an impenetrable barrier of defense that is almost impossible to strike. Regardless of the Form the Soresu master chooses to adopt, he can reroll all failed Block and Deflect attempts.

Form 4 – Ataru
Prerequisites: Any two Lightsaber Combat or Jedi Guardian talents
This Lightsaber Form is an offensive style with wide, sweeping movements that involve heavy acrobatic prowess on the part of the practitioner to level offensive power through the mastery of tumbling. While an impressive display, the Form does little to augment the defensive capabilities of the practitioner.
DC 15: Leveraging the impressive acrobatics of Ataru against a single opponent, the practitioner gains a +1 Form bonus to Block and Deflect against any target whose threatened space the practitioner moves through.
DC 20: When the practitioner successfully tumbles through an enemy’s threatened square, he deals an additional +2 points of damage to that enemy on a successful attack. This reckless movement exposes the practitioner, leveling a -1 penalty to his Reflex Defense against the target he attacks until the beginning of his next turn.
DC 25: Against a single opponent, provided the practitioner moved through the target’s threatened space, all attacks gain a +5 Form bonus. Since this involves focusing all of his energy on attacking a single opponent, the practitioner suffers a -2 penalty on Block and Deflect against all other opponents.
Form Mastery: The master of Ataru incorporates the speed and momentum of this style into every Form of Lightsaber combat. The master of Ataru may use his Dexterity modifier instead of his Strength modifier to determine damage with his Lightsaber.

Form 5 (1) – Shien
Prerequisites: Deflect, Redirect Shot
A style specifically designed to protect the practitioner from heavy barrages of blaster fire, Shien specialists excel at engaging multiple ranged opponents but lack the precise tight movements to fend off a barrage of close attacks from a single source.
DC 15: The practitioner deals an additional +1 point of damage on a successful attack using the Redirect Shot talent.
DC 20: The practitioner gains a +2 Form bonus on all attack rolls that result from the successful use of Redirect Shot. The aggressive movements of this Form levy a -1 penalty to Reflex Defense, however.
DC 25: The practitioner gains a +5 Form bonus to Deflect incoming blaster fire. The wide, sweeping movements of this Form leave the practitioner vulnerable to focused assault from a single opponent. The practitioner suffers an additional -2 penalty to Block attacks from a target that makes multiple attacks in the same round.
Form Mastery: The master of Shien has an unprecedented ability to deflect incoming blaster file. In addition to the standard benefits of Redirect Shot, the Shien master may attempt to redirect multiple shots in the same round at a cumulative -5 penalty.

Form 5 (2) – Djem So
Prerequisites: Block, Riposte
A style focused almost exclusively on Lightsaber dueling, the practitioner of Djem So focuses his assault and defense on melee engagement which can leave him open to attacks from outside sources.
DC 15: The practitioner deals an additional +1 point of damage on a successful attack using the Riposte talent.
DC 20: The practitioner gains a +2 Form bonus on all attack rolls that result from the successful use of Riposte. The aggressive movements of this Form levy a -1 penalty to Reflex Defense, however.
DC 25: The practitioner gains a +5 Form bonus to Block incoming attacks. The tight, focused movements of this Form leave the practitioner vulnerable to a barraged assault. The practitioner suffers an additional -2 penalty to Deflect attacks from a target that makes multiple attacks in the same round.
Form Mastery: A master of Djem So shows his ability to utilize the weaknesses of other melee combatants no matter the Form he adopts. Once per turn, he may accept a -5 penalty to Block one attack in order to set his opponent up for a counterattack. If the Block is successful despite the penalty, he may make a Lightsaber attack on the target. This ability otherwise follows the same guidelines outlined in the Riposte talent (KotOR p.25), save that it can be used once per round instead of once per encounter.

Form 6 – Niman
Prerequisites: Any Two Talents that require being Force Sensitive
Niman is the most well rounded of all the Lightsaber forms and typically practiced by those who do not wish to focus on Lightsaber training. While it has few weaknesses, it also carries few strengths and requires relatively little practice to maintain. This makes Niman a form favored by most Consulars and others who are only interested in a basic understanding of Lightsaber combat.
DC 15: Upon assuming the Niman form, the practitioner may add a +1 Form bonus to a Defense of his choice. This bonus can be switched to a different defense if the practitioner spends a swift action to reactivate this Form, but he must use the new Use the Force check as normal.
DC 20: Once per turn while utilizing the Niman Form, the practitioner may grant himself a +2 Form bonus to a single skill check. This benefit can be used on different skills each round but may only be applied once, even if the same skill is used multiple times in a round.
DC 25: The master of Niman is capable of ignoring up to 5 points of penalties on attack rolls with Lightsabers. These include, but are not limited to: condition track penalties, poison, disease, old age, and multiple attack penalties. Outside the aforementioned list, the GM is the authority on what penalties may be negated through the practice if Niman.
Form Mastery: The Niman master has internalized the versatility commonly associated with this style. Regardless of what Form they are using, the Niman master may reroll any d20 roll once per encounter.

Form 7 – Juyo
Prerequisites: Weapon Specialization (Lightsaber), one other Lightsaber Combat Talent
One of the most aggressive styles, Juyo is devoted almost entirely to offensive and aggressive action. Controversial in the Old Republic, the very nature of this Form often tested the mental and physical fortitude of the Jedi that pursued it.
DC 15: Acclimated to the rigors the form demands, the practicioner gains a +1 Form bonus to his Fortitude Defense while utilizing Juyo. This bonus is explicitly permitted to increase his Damage Threshold as well.
DC 20: Forever pressing the offensive, the practitioner gains a +2 Form bonus on attack rolls with his Lightsaber. The aggressive style, however, leaves the practitioner open to attacks levying a -1 penalty to Use the Force checks to activate Block and Deflect.
DC 25: Heavy swings and brutal attacks grant the practitioner a +5 bonus to damage when wielding a single Lightsaber in both hands. Almost entirely forsaking defense for the killing blow, the practitioner pursues his foes with reckless abandon levying a -2 penalty to Reflex Defense.
Form Mastery: The master of Juyo is adept at striking opponents and the unpredictable and erratic style of Juyo makes it exceptionally hard to defend against. Regardless of what style the master wields, he can reroll a single attack roll once per round. The Juyo master must accept the reroll, even if worse than the original.

Tactical Form – Sokan
Prerequisites: Any two Lightsaber Combat Talents
A less commonly recognized Form, Sokan was designed to grant the user tactical advantage based on terrain and encouraged a general awareness of one’s surroundings. As such, Sokan is commonly practiced by those that prefer to leverage tactical advantages over others.
DC 15: If the Sokan practitioner successfully makes a skill check that is opposed by an opponent, he gains a +1 Form bonus his next attack roll against that opponent in the same turn.
DC 20: If the practitioner is adjacent to any terrain features that could grant cover, he gains a +2 Form bonus to his Reflex Defense.
DC 25: If the Sokan practitioner holds an action to make an attack when an enemy attempts to move through his threatened square, he gains a +5 Form bonus on his attack roll.
Form Mastery: No matter the Form assumed, a master of Sokan ignores any penalties from rough terrain (including doubling movement) and can always take 10 on Acrobatics checks to avoid attacks of opportunity.

Advanced Forms
Advanced Lightsaber Forms are Forms that are developed as extensions of an existing Lightsaber Form that take the mastery of the Form to a new level. Due to the increased difficulty to utilize these forms, they cannot be practiced by anyone who has not first mastered the prerequisite Form (represented by taking the corresponding Lightsaber Form talent). When making a Use the Force check to assume a prerequisite Form, compare the result to the Lightsaber Form and its corresponding Advanced Form. The practitioner gains any benefits from both Forms with a DC equal to or less than the resulting skill check. Learning an Advanced Form counts against the total number of Forms a character can learn.

Advanced Form – Jar’Kai
Prerequisites: Any Lightsaber Form Talent
Jar’Kai is a Form developed exclusively for combatants that favor wielding two Lightsabers at once. While difficult to manage, a master of wielding two Lightsabers has an undeniable versatility in all facets of combat.
DC 30: Applying the basic principles of Jar’Kai to all facets of combat, mastery of Jar’Kai at this level allows the practitioner to apply all Form modifiers (Jar’Kai and the prerequisite Form included) and all Lightsaber Combat and Form Talents when wielding any two melee weapons, not just Lightsabers.
DC 35: Mastering the art of manipulating multiple Lightsabers with the Force, the Jar’Kai practitioner can wield up to his Charisma modifier Lightsabers at once with the Kinetic Combat Force Power. Further, as a full round action, the combatant may move all Lightsabers under the effect of Kinetic Combat up to 6 squares then attack. The number of attacks and associated penalties are governed by feats that grant extra attacks, such as Dual Weapon Mastery and Double Attack. The practitioner may have each Lightsaber make as many or as few attacks as he’s able. The Lightsabers otherwise follow the same guidelines outlined in the Kinetic Combat Force Power
Form Mastery: Regardless of what Form the Jar’Kai practitioner has active, when wielding two Lightsabers gains twice the normal benefit from the Lightsaber Defense talent.

Advanced Form – Trakata
Prerequisites: Any Lightsaber Form Talent
Trakata was initially designed by Jedi Consulars to compensate for their competency in Lightsaber combat and takes advantage of the Lightsabers unique ability to turn on and off.
DC 30: The sweeping movements and erratic blade control of the Trakata style makes it incredibly difficult for another Lightsaber duelist to block the blade of the practitioner. If a target successfully Blocks an attack that benefits from the Feint (Core p.66) maneuver, the target must reroll his Use the Force check and accept the result. If a Force Point was spent on the Block attempt, those dice are rerolled as well.
DC 35: Mastery of Trakata allows the practitioner to control his Lightsaber blade with flawless precision, conferring a +5 Form bonus on Deception checks to feint in combat.
Form Mastery: Masters of Trakata are able to work manipulating their Lightsaber blade into any combat Form. The Trakata master can spend two swift actions to perform a Feint (Core p.66) in combat. The swift actions must be spent in either the same or consecutive rounds.

Advanced Form – Vaapad
Prerequisites: Juyo
Vaapad is an extremely dangerous form which amps up the aggressive style of Juyo to new heights. Vapaad’s trademark style is evident in practitioners by the speed of their blade which seems to move in one consistent blur, too fast for the eye to follow.
DC 30: At this level of mastery, the Vaapad practitioner can accept a single Dark Side point to automatically hit and confirm a critical hit on an natural attack roll of 19 with a Lightsaber assuming the target is a sentient being with a Dark Side score of 1 or higher. Like natural 20 rolls, this attack can be negated with the use of Block.
DC 35: Moving a Lightsaber with such speed that it appears to be a blur of dozens of blades attacking at once, this technique imposes a -5 penalty on attempts to utilize the Block talent against the Vaapad practitioner.
Form Mastery: Mastery of Vaapad results in one of the most lethal Lightsaber combatants possible. Regardless of the Form assumed, the master of Vaapad scores a critical hit if a Lightsaber attack with a natural attack roll of 19 successfully strikes a target.

Lightsaber Form Feats
Blended Form Mastery
Prerequisites: At least one Lightsaber Form talent
Benefit: Your intrinsic mastery of a single Form allows you to blend principles of different Forms to create a more advanced Lightsaber style. When your character activates a Form he possesses the corresponding Lightsaber Form talent for, he may also gain the benefits of second Form of his choosing. Make a Use the Force check at a -5 penalty, and compare the result to both Forms to determine the benefits conferred.
Special: If your character also possesses the Lightsaber Form talent for the second Form he chooses, ignore the -5 penalty to your Use the Force check.

Expert Practitioner
Prerequisites: Must know at least one Lightsaber Form
Benefit: Pick a single Lightsaber Form your character knows. You gain a +5 Insight bonus to the Use the Force check to assume your chosen Form.
Bonus Feat: Add this Feat to the list of Bonus Feats a Jedi may take every even level.

Extra Forms
Prerequisite: Force Sensitive, Weapon Proficiency (Lightsaber)
Benefit: Your character can learn a number of additional Lightsaber Forms equal to your Wisdom modifier.
Special: Stackable. This Feat can be taken multiple times, with each Feat granting access to additional Lightsaber Forms equal to your Wisdom modifier.
Bonus Feat: Add this Feat to the list of Bonus Feats a Jedi may take every even level.

Focused Form
Prerequisite: Must know at least one Lightsaber Form
Benefit: Choose a single Lightsaber Form you are proficient with. When in that Lightsaber Form, you gain a +2 Form bonus on all Use the Force checks and attack rolls.

Lightsaber Equipment Modifications
A Lightsaber can be built with a specific Form in mind to give the practitioner a slight edge which might make all the difference, such as the traditional curved blade associated with Makashi. This takes up the single equipment modification standard on most Lightsabers but otherwise functions as a single emplacement point. Building a Lightsaber specifically geared toward a single style grants the user a +2 Equipment bonus to Use the Force checks to adopt the associated Form.

Design Notes
Canonically, even in the Saga books themselves, Star Wars continually refers to Jedi that are proficient with lightsaber forms but have not mastered them. The new system allows practitioners to use a Form without taking the corresponding Talent, blend “elements” of other Forms (using Lightsaber Form Force Powers) into one main Form, explains how all Jedi know at least one Form of Lightsaber combat (without requiring Talent expenditures), explains how using one style has “weaknesses” which can be exploited which is commonly mentioned in canon, and explains how modifying a Lightsaber can assist with practicing one particular Form. Most of the modifiers described in each Lightsaber Form also represent abilities of Jedi that have used those Forms in various depictions.

Taking the Lightsaber Form Talent denotes rote mastery of that specific lightsaber combat form.

Trying to follow a static pattern of +1/-0, +2/-1, +5/-2; penalty exemption for weaker/not as often applicable bonuses. Ideally, this will allow players/GMs to easily balance customized Forms.
