Rise of the Rebellion
Praetorian Guard Force Tradition
The Praetorian Guard uses elements from the Jedi and Sith orders that came before it, blending a special “grey” view of the Force for the elite force sensitive people that make up its ranks. These talents otherwise follow the same rules as talents of other force using traditions and may be taken in place of a class talent for any force sensitive entity specially trained by the Praetorian Guard.
Membership Any Force Sensitive creature that joins the Praetorian Guard may be trained in the talents of this tradition.
Special Any character that has at least one talent from this tradition may attempt to build their own light saber upon obtaining seven heroic character levels. The lightsaber construction otherwise follows the rules outlined on page 40 of the Star Wars Saga Edition Core Rulebook.
Saber Defense: While holding an ignited lightsaber, the Praetorian Guard gains the ability to negate one melee or ranged attack per round. As a reaction to an attack roll that overcomes the Praetorian Guard’s Reflex Defense, he makes a Use the Force check. If the check result equals or exceeds the result of the attack roll, the attack is negated. This technique can be used to negate critical hits and area of effect attacks. The Praetorian Guard must be aware of the attack and not flat-footed in order to use this talent. This talent can only block personal scale weaponry and has no effect on attacks made by Colossal (frigate) sized or larger vehicles unless made with point defense weapons. This talent counts as the Block and Deflect talents for purposes of meeting prerequisites for other talents.
Improved Saber Defense: This talent permanently enhances its prerequisite, allowing the Praetorian Guard to deflect multiple attacks in a single round. The Praetorian Guard suffers a cumulative -5 penalty to activate Saber Defense for every previous activation since the beginning of his last turn.
Prerequisite: Saber Defense
Walk the Line: While considered “gray” by other force using traditions, the Praetorian Guard teaches that it is the weakness of the individual that causes them to succumb to the dark side, not an inherent evil in the force. As a reaction to taking a Dark Side point for using a Force Power with the dark side descriptor, the Praetorian may attempt a Use the Force check. The difficulty is equal to 15 + his own Hit Dice. Success prevents the character’s dark side score from increasing. If the Praetorian Guard uses a dark side power in the defense of another sentient being, subject to GM discretion, he gains a +5 morale bonus on this check.
Praetorian Guard: The Praetorian Guard are often called upon to protect those that cannot protect themselves which makes this talent a staple in many training regimens. As a free action when adjacent to a willing ally, the Praetorian Guard may expend a single Force Point. Doing so allows the Praetorian Guard to use the Saber Defense and Improved Saber Defense on the target for the duration of the encounter provided the target is within the Praetorian Guard’s reach.
Prerequisite: Saber Defense
